When THE HORROR DRUNX was first founded about 8 years ago, one of the things that was at the core of our Horrormania was to visit the locations where
Horror movies were shot (or places that were important to the Horror genre), raise a toast and drink some booze to celebrate, and most importantly take
some drunken pictures. Sometimes we got in trouble, sometimes we had to run like hell to keep from being caught, but each and every time we had a blast
doing it!
One place we went to on these excursions was the RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD filming locations for the UNEEDA MEDICAL SUPPLY and RESURECTION CEMETARY in
the film. It ended up bad that time. Without getting into it too much... We got our pictures, and drank our toast, but when the authorities arrived a
skirmish broke out and the camera suffered the worst casualties. haha Such is the life of a Horror Drunx. But we don't give up that easy. After much
training and self conviction, our crack gureilla assalt team have now returned to the grave and are ready to party!
OUR MISSION:
To return to the RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD locations. Armed with as many 40oz bottles of booze as we could carry, a camera, and one
of those beer bong funnels that looks like a skull and a spinal column to guzzle our booze with. We foolheartedly returned in broad daylight to complete
our mission!
DRUNX SQUAD MEMBERS ON THIS MISSION:
MORTIMER A. LONDON: The founder and leader of THE HORROR DRUNX.
SID TERROR: Editor-In-Chief of The Horror Drunx online magazine, Hollywood chapter leader, Singer for SID TERROR'S UNDEAD (who were at one time to be
on the soundtrack of ROTLD).
DEATH DOLLY: (a.k.a. Lucy) East Los Angeles County chapter leader, whose job it was to take most of the pictures, stay sober, drive the getaway car, and
post bail if necessary.
LOCATION:
The outskirts of downtown Los Angeles. The exact address is 698 Moulton Avenue if you'd like to pay it a visit too. We suggest you
MapQuest it. It is only about five blocks off of the 5 freeway...
In the movie, Uneeda Medical Supply was located in Louisville Kentucky, but as we said earlier, it was actually a location near downtown Los Angeles. We
parked the car, cracked open some 40's of Olde English (same as the Horror Drunx font) and proceeded to shotgun 'em though the beer bong while
loitering in the middle of the street. Not as dangerous as it sounds, because it is a dead end street with little traffic. And there it was...

ABOVE:THEN- All dressed up for filming, with a prop sign as it appeared in the movie.
NOW- The sign is gone, and some strange kind of artsy addition has been added
by the new owner.(Oh, and that is Mort pouring and Sid guzzling)
The ol' building looks pretty much the same, except it now has a weird structure built on the top of it. We never did figure out its purpose. The
building is actually in a gated industrial area off the street, full of artists lofts and workshops from the look of it. The gate was open, so armed with
some liquid courage we decided to enter and have a snoop around. It's cool, there are roads going back there...
We were surprised at how much foliage was around the place now. Huge trees stand where there weren't any in the film,
and the distinctive outcropping on the front of the building is all overgrown with Ivy now. The building itself is also now surrounded by a security
fence. A lot has changed in the 24 years since RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD shot here.
We cracked open another 40oz and continued around the eastern side of the building...
ABOVE: Yep, there it was, the side of the building where
the entrance door seen in the movie is.
Like we said, the building is surrounded by a security fence now. Inside that fence is also some bigassed dog houses. We
didn't see any bigassed dogs to go along with 'em, but we'd reccomend you not scale the fence to look for them. A Horror Drunx word of advice
here: Always be respectful when visiting a movie location and don't disturb the current occupants. They probably want to talk to you as much as you
want to talk to religious zealots that pound on your door and try to give you pamphlets.
We continued toward the rear of the building...
ABOVE: The strange additions to the rear of the building,
complete with suspended gangplank walkways.
The back of the building is perty darn wacky. We had just about wrapped things up thinking our work here was done, when
we looked back at the building across the alley. Lo' and behold, there was another possible link to the creative process behind RETURN OF THE LIVING
DEAD! If you've read this far, you are most likely familiar with the funeral home creamatorium in the movie right? Our guess was that while scouting
locations for the film, Dan O'Bannon may just have seen this and decided to write it into the final screenplay....
ABOVE: Just across the alley from the Uneeda location. Is it our imagination,
or does this incinorator look like it may have been what gave Dan O'Bannon
the idea for the creamatorium in the film? They look remarkably similar, don't they?
ABOVE: Death Dolly and Sid Terror feed the flames of the creamatorium some boozes. Mortimer was apparently loosing focus a little bit when he
snapped this pic. Booze-vision!
After we we had finished our walkthrough of the Uneeda location, we made our way back to the gate. If you look past the
Uneeda building about a hundred and fifty feet farther down the road into the dead end of Moulton Avenue, you come to our next RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD
LOCATION....
ABOVE: Continuing to the dead end of Moulton Avenue you will see our nect point of interest.
ABOVE: THEN - The Ressurection Cemetary gates/walls set, actually a false facade
built by the movie crew, as seen from the car of the character "Suicide" in the film.
Note the plants and trees added by the film company to hide the location past the walls.
NOW- As the same location appears today without the sets and movie magic.
ABOVE: A closer look at the Ressurection Cemetary gate set as seen in the movie.
ABOVE: Mortimer A. London inhales some booze on the approximate spot where
the graveyard gates set stood in the movie.
Looking at the location, it becomes obvious why the set designers in the film erected huge walls, trees, and all the
other foliage. About fifty feet past the maintence gates that are a realworld part of this location, are train tracks and a railroad switching yard. We
never heard of a train going through the center of a boneyard, have you? Yet if you go back and watch the film, the first time you see the Uneeda
building there is a train going past behind it, where the middle of the graveyard would be.
ABOVE: Mortimer A. London and Sid Terror with what would have been Ressurection Cemetary behind them. Is this where we can finally insert the
joke about how UNEEDA 'nother drink?
We hope you've enjoyed our little tour of these RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD locations. That address again, if you want
to pay it a visit yourself, is 698 Moulton Avenue, Los Angeles, California.
If you live in the Los Angeles area, we are going to have a little contest for you now. The first person that can get a picture of the 40oz we left
behind in what would have been Ressurection Cemetary and posts it here, will win a full set of Official HORROR DRUNX button badge pins! We haven't
even started selling these in the website store yet, so you'll be sure to be the first on your block to have 'em!
Just photograph the bottle where you see it, without touching or moving it first. Then get another picture of you standing in front of the Uneeda
building, holding the bottle up and making believe you are chugging it to win! Good luck!
But if you don't find the bottle and find a strange barrel instead, DO NOT OPEN IT! Call the number on the barrel immediately instead!
