well i picked up this bad boy the week it came out and i gotta say it was a real eye opener i cant believe how much gore got cut out of it! i always enjoyed
the original as i thought it was the best of the copycat slashers of the early 80s heyday. it never got its due for whatever reason but i will say this did it
have a holiday theme like many others? yes! did it have the typical kills? yes! did it have a killer in a mask? yes! pretty standard formula for the time
however the casting and the acting was better than all the other copycats in my opinion. the end was unique for the fact that all the copycats in that era
always just had a virgin girl alive at the end to fight the killer and this one had a love triangle going on between the killer, the survivor girl and her ex
boyfriend who all 3 were alive at then end, way diferent formula there!
while the acting from some of the cast was meh at best the main characters were pretty damn good and i always found myself actually caring about them versus other movies where i want them to die. the killer's outfit was one of the most original looks i have ever seen and have yet to see something that good since.
now onto the dvd itself. you have 2 options when watching this, you can watch it in its original theatrical form or you can watch it uncut. when the uncut scenes come into play the quality shifts noticeably but it doesnt interfere with your enjoyment, i think the cut footage was sitting around for so long that it might have been difficult for them to restore properly or maybe they were just lazy but its better to see it like this than not at all. there is a cool 20 minute documentary about the rise of the slasher film and how this movie fit in but the last 5 minutes of it degrades itself by pimping out the remake so fast foward through it!
if you were a fan of the original or just a fan of slashers and havent seen it i recommend getting this you wont be disappointed! one thing though is you may have a hard time finding it, i went to 5 different places before i finally found a copy. from what many stores told me its a very limited release and most stores were getting 2 to 4 copies max because they dont want to "hold stock on a movie that wasnt very popular"
well onto the screencaps of the uncut gore enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!
