My good friend and fellow Horror enthusiast Devon (who is my my roommate, and also happened to already have the movie) suggested to me that I should check out the movie Trick 'r Treat. Devon claimed that it was amazing, and that it was much better than a lot of new Horror films that have come out recently. I've never even heard of the movie, I don't know if it was ever in theaters or not because I typically do not go out of my way to check out what's new in theaters. It's not a secret that new Horror usually lets me down in a big way.
So naturally I went into this movie not expecting much, I was very skeptic of what was going to come. It turns out the movie is done in the anthology style of the classic movies Tales From The Crypt (the 1970s movie, not the HBO series), The Vault Of Horror, and Creepshow, 4 short stories with a short intro. In this film, all 4 of the stories are somehow intertwined, even in the very slightest way, almost to where you have to be looking for the connections in a couple cases. Each story takes place on Halloween night and have a different theme, all fairly well executed.
My favorite thing about this movie is it mixes both supernatural elements as well and the general spookyness of Halloween as well as subtle dark comedy to blend into a fanastic film. Michael Dougherty was able to fight the trends of common modern horror by avoiding horrible suspense scenes that I've grown to loathe so very much. He builds an eery atmosphere in a couple of the stories, especially the "Halloween school bus massacre" story. With several small twists throughout the movie it manages to keep a grasp on your attention.
I will definitely watch this movie again, if not all the time at least once a year around the Halloween season. Heck, I even recommended it to my mom, who also enjoys a good horror movie as well.
So see it and definitely give it a place on the shelves of your Horror film DVD collection.
