Quite an involving story, and well documented, Sid.
My primary question -- and one of others, I'd imagine -- is I cannot understand why, if indeed you held the film in your hands, saw the title card on the film, saw Lon Chaney as the 'vampire' on the other reel, in all respects held LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT in your hands (!), why you would so stealthily and quietly put it back and leave. It seems you said nothing to anyone officially and the 'secret' was held just between a few of your friends and associates? No, you should not have stolen it. But why didn't you cause a public clamor then and have film buffs and/or historians meet with Turner/MGM and go get the film from the storage vault? Because if I'm reading this right, you're basically saying you stumbled upon it (or ferreted it out), held it in your hands, realized what it was, had a notation mnade on the film cannister, and then took no other action for years and never really mentioned it publicly. That confuses me. Am I missing something? This wasn't the 60s. It was 1998, only a decade ago. Such a monumental find, and then you walk away? And now it is gone? Explain the reluctance to raise an alarum immediately, please? david

Utterly FANTASTIC, Sid!
Bravissimo!
What a GREAT day this has been in so many ways.
Oh, by the way.. I did tell you I went to grad school at SC, right? I know Sandra Joy Lee, personally. I also know a few current film professors there as well... just saying. But to you a big |

As I said in the article, the facility was transferring films from nitrate to safety film on a daily basis. I transported prints myself. In other words, the print was EXACTLY where it should have been for the rightful owners to do what should have been done with it. Granted, they thought it was missing a reel which is what the hang up was previous to that, but I had a note made to remedy that in the database. I have been telling people for years about this... Anyone who would listen. But obviously the people who were listening were not the people who could do anything about it, or they would have. It has been frustrating and everyone has seemed to have dropped the ball on it, including MGM staff who at one time found it, told their bosses, and were told "Eh, we don't have the rights to it anymore, so who cares, we can't do anything with it". Had they just driven it across town to the people who did own it, we wouldn't be talking now. But they didn't because no one wanted to take responsibility for it, or rock any boats, because that might endanger their job security. IN the present, I've drawn everyone a roadmap to it and given people the ammunition to do something about it with the list of email addresses and phone numbers at the end of the article. I urge everyone to use this information I've laid out in great detail, to get out there and rattle cages and put bees in bonnets about this. WE CAN GET IT OUT IF WE ALL WORK TOGETHER AT ALL OUR RESOURCES. Above going in there and "liberating" the print myself somehow, which would have dire legal ramifications (believe me, I've planed and plotted it in my head for years) a write in / phone call campaign is about all that can be done. So my question is, why are people still sitting here? GET OUT THERE AND GET BUSY TROOPS! --Sid Terror

I would also like to believe, but I wonder what took you so long?
Why did you not make this information public after you held the can in your hands? Sorry, I dont quite undersatnd. Why now suddenly? Now you write there is a rush, it needs to be restored quickly, ten years ago it would have been in a better shape. As I stated before, I really want to believe... |

No- I absolutely want the movie to be found. In fact I believe in my heart that it is sitting somewhere and will eventually be found. But I just don't
believe this story.

Fascinating story and I joined this fine website for it. Apparently you think that in order to find the print in order to properly perserve it, we would need
to get the attention of people. I recommend letting the local California news outlets know about it and maybe sending emails to the big film sites such as
IMDB. Or we could call the Turner and Warner Brothers people and let try to let them know the severity of what they have.

What a great story. And I certainly hope it's true. (For Forry's sake...hurry up)
But I must echo the grumblings...why now? Tears would have welled up in my eyes too had I held it in my hands. As I said. A great story...well told. |

Well I've emailed Fox and NBC's LA affilates about this being a potential news scoop. AICN has posted this as a top story so that should spread
publicity to this web page.

What About Chaney/Browning's THE BLACKBIRD (1926)? | #19 | ||
I really hope that this story is true. I think that it honestly
might be. However, in the meantime, how many of you here have seen Tod Browning's THE BLACKBIRD (1926), with Chaney, Renee Adoree, and Owen Moore? While
not a lost film, it is just like a "lost film" since it has been rarely seen for decades on end.
Well, this film has been fully restored and has a new score by Robert
Israel. It is listed as THE BLACK BIRD in the TCM Data Base, not THE BLACKBIRD, which I believe is the correct title? Anyway, I am working very hard right
now to get an American TCM premier in October. I have been in contact with TCM Programmer Charles Tabesh, and it looks like it could happen? This edition was
actually ready to go in 2005, but has only been seen on some foreign TCM's so far. I don't no why? Seems the restoration was produced, and forgotten
about, and has yet to premier in the States?
That being said, I have an excellent copy on DVD-R, if anyone is
interested? There are foreign translations beneath the English title cards, but other than that it looks great. The film is in better shape than almost any
other surviving MGM Lon Chaney feature. In all sincerity this is probably a better film than LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT was anyway! Definitely Chaney's most
underrated movie.
If you want to see this film on TCM, start requesting it on the TCM
Movie Data Base, and be sure to vote for a DVD release as well. It really should be included in the forth-coming TCM Archives Lon Chaney 2 set. Though at
present it was not scheduled among the titles. So raise a fuss! With a brand new Browning documentary slated to be part of the release, the collection simply
must feature THE BLACKBIRD as well!
