Wouldn't that be Warner Bros.? I'm not sure why they'd keep a lid on the news that one of, if not the, most sought after of lost films has now been found. I understand it might take a while before it would be made available via DVD release (like the restored footage of Metropolis), but wouldn't it help build awareness and anticipation of an eventual release if news was made public? I'm puzzled why such a discovery wouldn't have become widely known within the film restoration and preservation community.

Just a shot in the dark here. Finding it is one thing, taking the time to fully inspect the print and see what kind of shape it is in, then make the judgement call as to how much of the film can be restored and other factors, may enter into it. They wouldn't want to say publicly that they found it and the feature will be released in the next Chaney Collection DVD, if nitrate cancer got to all but 2 minutes of non vampire footage. Maybe they are playing it safe until that can be figured out. Even if they found it, it may take weeks or months for an announcement.

Didn't it take years from the time the complete print of Metropolis was found in Buenos Aires, until people in Germany believed them and made a press announcement? And even then the people in Germany inspected it first and made a video transfer before news was made public.

Alright, consider this worst possible outcome... What if they found London After Midnight and it turns out the print is completely rotted and unusable? No studio executive or "respected preservationist" is going to make a press announcement that they had it all the time and did nothing with it until a guy named Sid Terror and some Horror Drunx told them they had it, but by the time they knew they had it the print was completely rotted. They would look like fools. Instead they would quietly slide the remains into an incinerator and hope no one found out how badly they blew it.

Sid Terror and the other people on staff here at The Horror Drunx web site were well aware when we decided to print this story that there might be a worst possible outcome like that and no one would believe us, or that no one would give us credit for being the whistle blowers. We took that chance despite possible public ridicule because getting the story out there was more important than not getting it out there.

It said in the first paragraph of Sid's article that "Yes. It is true. For those who scoff and doubt (I'm sure you will be legion) that the most notorious lost film of all times was located". We love the genre enough that we have the nuts to stick our necks out regardless of what people might say or think of us. In a horror community full of horrorfannies that are afraid to rock the boat or take a chance with their credibility, who else would be brave (or foolhardy) enough to say it this big and loud with this much coverage?

Sid Terror and the other people on staff here at The Horror Drunx web site were well aware when we decided to print this story that there might be a worst possible outcome like that and no one would believe us, or that no one would give us credit for being the whistle blowers.

I have to admit, this is partly why I'm still leery about this story. For all that's been said, what can't be simply dismissed is the fact that it all remains the claim of one person, with the only other party who could verify any part of it having been dead for over ten years. However, reading through the entire thread, the only ones asking hard questions are forum outsiders, while everyone within the Horrordrunx community seems to have accepted Sid Terror's story automatically based on no more than "Sid's a good guy so he wouldn't lie." It's become not "his" story but "our" story ("prove us wrong") and not accepting it on faith is reason for expulsion from the community (bad, disruptive attitudes and all that).

I think this is why no newspaper or TV station or industry source has run with the story - when it functions more as a belief system, it's more Scientology than a legitimate, verified news item.

Not to be snide, but many of the people here can say they know Sid personally and know what kind of person he is. Some for many many years of friendship and personal dealings with him. For those who have heard the story and asked their questions in person, doing it here is redundant. Most of us on staff at www.TheHorrorDrunx.com got our questions out of the way long before we decided it was a story we'd get behind and support here. Others can call him on the phone, email him, or sit in a room and talk to the guy so no reason to do it in a forum. So of course it would be mostly forum outsiders asking the questions. As long as they aren't creeps or horribly rude about it, that is all good.

Please seriously think about something for a moment. The way the mainstream news media works in this country is they wait for this kind of story to be over, then they report the happy news and everyone breathes a sigh of relief. This story is unresolved, that is why they don't report it.

I have just one question for you that I hope you don't mind my asking. Suppose you had a trusted friend you'd known for years. Then one day some stranger, that doesn't know your friend or what kind of a person they are, knocks loudly on the door of your house. The first thing this stranger says when you open the door is that your close friend is full of crap and is a horrible person. You stick up for your friend, but then this ignorant person adds insult to injury by saying you are acting like a brainwashed cult member for sticking up for your longtime trusted friend. Now you don't know this unreasonable stranger that has shown up at your door, so there is nothing invested there and nothing to lose. Tell the truth... You'd either ask them to not be so rude, or you'd ask them to leave your home, or both, right? A serious question. Please answer. Put yourself in that position and you might realize how some people here feel.

The information in Sid Terror's article was ultimately put out there for a small and select group of people who work in film storage archives where this film might have been sent, so that they might have the clues to continue the search in the most likely places where it would be. That's because those are places where Sid and the rest of us who knew the information don't have access. If those people people working in those archives are conscientious and do their jobs and WANT to find London After Midnight, this is best damn lead they have had since about 5 minutes before the MGM film vault burned decades ago. Now given the information, if they still don't want to at least look, they won't. That is a shame, but it won't be found and the mainstream news media will never pick it up.

If I was those people in the archives, I wouldn't be looking in the obvious places for "London After Midnight". If it was there, it would have been found already. They need to look for "The Hypnotist" and they also need to get some unpaid interns from film school to start identifying what are in the volumes of unmarked cans and boxes. Sid has offered to do it for free himself and this is a person who knows what he is looking for and is more knowledgeable about it than an intern would be.

I'm not saying that Dick May who catalogued the assets in the MGM holdings did a bad job at what he did. On the contrary, all indications are that he did an amazing job. But he is human and subject to human error. Even he would admit that, given the sheer number of assets he went through, he would be out of line by thinking he and his crew might not have overlooked something along the way. That's all I'm saying.

We didn't do this for web site hits. We could have done that by cutting and pasting and re posting press releases and wire service stories like everyone else does. Sid didn't do it for publicity for himself or his band because he didn't even mention the name of his band in the article and he could have gotten all the publicity he wanted by just releasing a new CD. The people who make these kind of accusations just don't think them through before they make them.

Now back to the question about the rude person in your house... What would you do?

You'd either ask them to not be so rude, or you'd ask them to leave your home, or both, right? A serious question. Please answer. Put yourself in that position and you might realize how some people here feel.

Regarding this hypothetical, I'm guessing the answer you're looking for is that if someone comes to your front door and acts rudely, you tell them to leave and then shut the door. The problem with this very narrow example, though, is that it doesn't fully apply in this situation, in part because:

An internet message board open to the public isn't a private residence; even if it was, the London After Midnight story wasn't kept "in-house," as it were. As you state, Horror Drunx members already knew the story, so they didn't question any part of it. Clearly, then, the story was made public with the intention to spread the word, namely to non-forum members - which pretty much means people who wouldn't know Sid and would have every reason to question his reliability. Put yourself in their position and understand how they might respond.

True, but since there isn't any physical or "forensic" evidence and it all depends upon one person's word, said person's credibility would be a legitimate subject for cross-examination. However, it seems we've been repeatedly discouraged from questioning Sid's past history too closely. (The "this story isn't about me…" stance which comes despite the initial story being chock full of personal history). Claims of being related to a famous genre actor, claims of movie credits that can't be substantiated because of "confidentiality agreements," claims of previously having found missing films or shorts before that aren't documented, etc. I must admit it's troubling that although Sid says he's been a script doctor and had scripts optioned by people at Paramount, he doesn't seem to have an imdb page or an entry in the Hollywood Creative Directory, either under his stage name or his real name. How much of his film-related work is verifiable?

Not one thing that you have brought up here is going to get anyone any closer to locating that print of LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT.

And not one of the archivists or historians or executives who I have had contact with privately and professionally about this matter (as it should have been) have asked those questions because they know those things don't matter in relationship to this. Not one.

This discovery was made when I was working for a motion-picture based transportation company as what was basically a glorified courier. I obviously passed that company test and was trusted by them or I wouldn't have had the job. That is all that matters in relation to this topic.

The day that questions that don't even relate to this, coming from people who apparently can do nothing about it, make a difference in whether LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT is located again or not begin to matter... Well that is the day that I will make a career out of answering them.

Until then, I have better and more important things to do with my time. Like locating this damned movie.

So if that is not agreeable to you and you would rather further distract the issue and my time, we have nothing more to discuss. I will stick by the events and information conveyed in my article, without apologies to anyone, until the day that I die. THAT is who I am.

I thought I would post these two clips here. Before anyone gets overly excited, they are stop-motion animations that were just done over the last week or two by no less than Rick Baker. The word from Rick is that he used the Side Show London After Midnight figure "right out of the box" with no modifications. They really look amazing.

I think congratulations are in order for Mr. Sid Terror on his amazing article.� When such mainstream news sources as Aint-It-Cool News and Yahoo News have given it coverage and a multi Academy Award winner takes time�during working on The Wolfman remake at Universal to make these clips, it shows that the London After Midnight article and The Horror Drunx have really entered the public conciousness.

The attention that has been genarated will be very important in the location and reconstruction of this lost classic.

I have been reading all of this with interest over the last couple of weeks. Not that my opinions matter too much, I will say that I have no reason NOT to believe this story. I have been looking for lost british television over here for years and have been following lost british television "hoaxes" at the UK for decades. In the case of british television, the hoaxes are about people who have the material or had an uncle who used to work for a studio and took it, blah, blah, blah. The hoaxes are never about how the material is still in the hands of the studio.

I understand this film is considerably older than any of the british television I keep an eye open for but in 2003 a missing episode of the series "Adam Adamant Lives!" called 'D For Destruction' was found in a mis-labelled film can at the BBC which is the studio that made the series. Plus, since UCLA is involved some way in this story, 1 and a quarter episodes of the series "The Avengers" was found at the UCLA library in LA. What makes that story more interesting is that the episodes found were episode 1 "Hot Snow" (only 22 minutes) and episode 6 'Girl On The Trapeze' although according to all paperwork for the series, the first 8 episodes were broadcast live and never recorded in any form. How and where did these turn up?

I am not saying that is proof that we will get "London After Midnight" back but I am saying that in my opinion, what Sid Terror found and his explanation of the details in completely plausible especially with a large studio like MGM. I have been doing research into a studio over here who once held now missing british television and I believe that some of it still resides in its own archives. In the case of where missing material turns up, it nevers surprises me to expect the unexpected.

Sid Terror, I believe it is completely possible that the "London After Midnight" print you saw still exists and if it no longer exists, I would not believe it is from a hoax or any ill will but simply because of the nitrate stock and the passage of time. It could easily have been thrown out years ago. Though, I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

The pivotal point of Sid's odyssey occurs when AMC listed the film to be shown. He's convinced then that it is discovered and rescued. This also might explain why Forry Ackerman didn't raise holy hell about the same time. Not only does it appear that London After Midnight will be available finally and forever, but he (Sid) probably had a hand in making certain of it. More on this later.

Naysayers (of which I am not one) claim he should have acted immediately - to which in retrospect Sid heartily agrees. They imply he is making this up now...presumably with the assistance of a friend or two - to draw attention to his band and/or this website. Let's face it after all...enough hits to the site can translate into advertising dollars or increased recognition of his music. Now please indulge me for this brief story...

I once held in my hands the only known original footage (nitrate of course) of the outtakes from King King. (Another source turned up overseas in the ensuing years.) A friend of mine who is a noted collector of rare movie memorabilia had "discovered" it in the 70s. Upon realizing what a prize he acquired he immediately contacted UCLA so they could make a preservation negative of it. I suppose all of us here appreciate what a significant, historical find that was. I won't go into detail as to how he got it...let's just say it was totally unexpected. That's why I believe what Sid is saying...that's how these things tend to happen.

Now back to AMC all those years ago. This is the single most verifiable claim in the whole story. I seem to recall something to this effect myself...though I could be recalling a rumour I heard years ago as fact. In any case if AMC had it scheduled there is evidence. If someone can identify the date of the proposed broadcast it will be in the TV listings in every newspaper in the country on that day...and irrefutably prove beyond a doubt that - at the very least - Turner believed they had a print about that time. Further it lends undeniable credence to Sid's assertion that he was comfortable the film had been found and no additional action was necessary on his part. That should quiet the naysayers and maybe even give the "preservation community" an extra lead to follow.

Put yourself in that position and you might realize how some people here feel. The information in Sid Terror's article was ultimately put out there for a small and select group of people who work in film storage archives where this film might have been sent, so that they might have the clues to continue the search in the most likely places where it would be. That's because those are places where Sid and the rest of us who knew the information don't have access. If those people people working in those archives are conscientious and do their jobs and WANT to find London After Midnight, this is best damn lead they have had since about 5 minutes before the MGM film vault burned decades ago. Now given the information, if they still don't want to at least look, they won't. That is a shame, but it won't be found and the mainstream news media will never pick it up. If I was those people in the archives, I wouldn't be looking in the obvious places for "London After Midnight". If it was there, it would have been found already. They need to look for "The Hypnotist" and they also need to get some unpaid interns from film school to start identifying what are in the volumes of unmarked cans and boxes. Sid has offered to do it for free himself and this is a person who knows what he is looking for and is more knowledgeable about it than an intern would be. I'm not saying that Dick May who catalogued the assets in the MGM holdings did a bad job at what he did. On the contrary, all indications are that he did an amazing job. But he is human and subject to human error. Even he would admit that, given the sheer number of assets he went through, he would be out of line by thinking he and his crew might not have overlooked something along the way. That's all I'm saying. We didn't do this for web site hits. We could have done that by cutting and pasting and re posting press releases and wire service stories like everyone else does. Sid didn't do it for publicity for himself or his band because he didn't even mention the name of his band in the article and he could have gotten all the publicity he wanted by just releasing a new CD. The people who make these kind of accusations just don't think them through before they make them. Now back to the question about the rude person in your house... What would you do? Regarding this hypothetical, I'm guessing the answer you're looking for is that if someone comes to your front door and acts rudely, you tell them to leave and then shut the door. The problem with this very narrow example, though, is that it doesn't fully apply in this situation, in part because: Most of us on staff at www.TheHorrorDrunx.com got our questions out of the way long before we decided it was a story we'd get behind and support here. An internet message board open to the public isn't a private residence; even if it was, the London After Midnight story wasn't kept "in-house," as it were. As you state, Horror Drunx members already knew the story, so they didn't question any part of it. Clearly, then, the story was made public with the intention to spread the word, namely to non-forum members - which pretty much means people who wouldn't know Sid and would have every reason to question his reliability. Put yourself in their position and understand how they might respond. And if this was a court of law instead of a court of public opinion, that one persons word would be considered, their motives weighed, the important facts checked, and a decision made. True, but since there isn't any physical or "forensic" evidence and it all depends upon one person's word, said person's credibility would be a legitimate subject for cross-examination. However, it seems we've been repeatedly discouraged from questioning Sid's past history too closely. (The "this story isn't about me…" stance which comes despite the initial story being chock full of personal history). Claims of being related to a famous genre actor, claims of movie credits that can't be substantiated because of "confidentiality agreements," claims of previously having found missing films or shorts before that aren't documented, etc. I must admit it's troubling that although Sid says he's been a script doctor and had scripts optioned by people at Paramount, he doesn't seem to have an imdb page or an entry in the Hollywood Creative Directory, either under his stage name or his real name. And not one of the archivists or historians or executives who I have had contact with privately and professionally about this matter (as it should have been) have asked those questions because they know those things don't matter in relationship to this. Not one. This discovery was made when I was working for a motion-picture based transportation company as what was basically a glorified courier. I obviously passed that company test and was trusted by them or I wouldn't have had the job. That is all that matters in relation to this topic. The day that questions that don't even relate to this, coming from people who apparently can do nothing about it, make a difference in whether LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT is located again or not begin to matter... Well that is the day that I will make a career out of answering them. Until then, I have better and more important things to do with my time. Like locating this damned movie. Before anyone gets overly excited, they are stop-motion animations that were just done over the last week or two by no less than Rick Baker. The word from Rick is that he used the Side Show London After Midnight figure "right out of the box" with no modifications. They really look amazing. I think congratulations are in order for Mr. Sid Terror on his amazing article.� When such mainstream news sources as Aint-It-Cool News and Yahoo News have given it coverage and a multi Academy Award winner takes time�during working on The Wolfman remake at Universal to make these clips, it shows that the London After Midnight article and The Horror Drunx have really entered the public conciousness. Not that my opinions matter too much, I will say that I have no reason NOT to believe this story. I have been looking for lost british television over here for years and have been following lost british television "hoaxes" at the UK for decades. In the case of british television, the hoaxes are about people who have the material or had an uncle who used to work for a studio and took it, blah, blah, blah. The hoaxes are never about how the material is still in the hands of the studio. I understand this film is considerably older than any of the british television I keep an eye open for but in 2003 a missing episode of the series "Adam Adamant Lives!" called 'D For Destruction' was found in a mis-labelled film can at the BBC which is the studio that made the series. Plus, since UCLA is involved some way in this story, 1 and a quarter episodes of the series "The Avengers" was found at the UCLA library in LA. What makes that story more interesting is that the episodes found were episode 1 "Hot Snow" (only 22 minutes) and episode 6 'Girl On The Trapeze' although according to all paperwork for the series, the first 8 episodes were broadcast live and never recorded in any form. How and where did these turn up? I am not saying that is proof that we will get "London After Midnight" back but I am saying that in my opinion, what Sid Terror found and his explanation of the details in completely plausible especially with a large studio like MGM. I have been doing research into a studio over here who once held now missing british television and I believe that some of it still resides in its own archives. In the case of where missing material turns up, it nevers surprises me to expect the unexpected. Sid Terror, I believe it is completely possible that the "London After Midnight" print you saw still exists and if it no longer exists, I would not believe it is from a hoax or any ill will but simply because of the nitrate stock and the passage of time. It could easily have been thrown out years ago. Though, I'm keeping my fingers crossed! Take care, Greg

Posts: 2 09/04/08 18:06:41	The pivotal point of Sid's odyssey occurs when AMC listed the film to be shown. He's convinced then that it is discovered and rescued. This also might explain why Forry Ackerman didn't raise holy hell about the same time. Not only does it appear that London After Midnight will be available finally and forever, but he (Sid) probably had a hand in making certain of it. More on this later. Naysayers (of which I am not one) claim he should have acted immediately - to which in retrospect Sid heartily agrees. They imply he is making this up now...presumably with the assistance of a friend or two - to draw attention to his band and/or this website. Let's face it after all...enough hits to the site can translate into advertising dollars or increased recognition of his music. Now please indulge me for this brief story... I once held in my hands the only known original footage (nitrate of course) of the outtakes from King King. (Another source turned up overseas in the ensuing years.) A friend of mine who is a noted collector of rare movie memorabilia had "discovered" it in the 70s. Upon realizing what a prize he acquired he immediately contacted UCLA so they could make a preservation negative of it. I suppose all of us here appreciate what a significant, historical find that was. I won't go into detail as to how he got it...let's just say it was totally unexpected. That's why I believe what Sid is saying...that's how these things tend to happen. Now back to AMC all those years ago. This is the single most verifiable claim in the whole story. I seem to recall something to this effect myself...though I could be recalling a rumour I heard years ago as fact. In any case if AMC had it scheduled there is evidence. If someone can identify the date of the proposed broadcast it will be in the TV listings in every newspaper in the country on that day...and irrefutably prove beyond a doubt that - at the very least - Turner believed they had a print about that time. Further it lends undeniable credence to Sid's assertion that he was comfortable the film had been found and no additional action was necessary on his part. That should quiet the naysayers and maybe even give the "preservation community" an extra lead to follow.
