I hope this gets re-found. I have seen stills from it for a long time. I love Chaney's maw!

The Lost Vs. The Rarely Seen! | #22
Even if LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT were found, we probably wouldn't be
seeing the film publicly for quite awhile. On the other hand, THE BLACK BIRD is ready to go now? Why isn't this just as big a deal? It sure is to me, and
should be to most Chaney fans, and Browning fans, who have never seen it before?
The reason I give the story some credibility is who would have thought
that the once believed destroyed original camera negative to King Vidor's Masterpiece THE BIG PARADE (1925) would be found at Eastman House in virtually
pristine condition in 1997? And yet this actually happened! A similar situation involves Harold Lloyd's Comedy Classic THE FRESHMAN (1925), the American
Camera Negative was lost in a fire at his Greenacres Estate in 1943. In the late 90's, the European or secondary camera negative released under the title
"College Days" was discovered and used as the basis of the new restoration, now on DVD.
In another note, even if the story isn't true, it's not
impossible that a real genuine print of LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT, or even THE MIRACLE MAN (1920), or the lost reels to THE ROAD TO MANDALAY, could be stashed in
the late Roberto Di Chiara's vast and virtually un-explored Silent film Archive in Argentina?
Sadly Roberto passed away a few months ago, but there are literally
thousands of films in his collection that remain almost completely unidentified. Literally anything could be in there, including dozen's and dozen's of
movies that are currently considered to be lost! Something needs to be done to save as much of the Archive's contents as possible before it is to late!

An absolutely fascinating story! But I too am curious as to why you didn't he scream to high heaven about your discovery back in '88. I would have
refused to leave the building until I showed my evidence to someone, and I consider myself a very shy and reserved person! :)

I am interested in any Chaney film and I'll gladly sign any petition for a DVD release of The Black Bird but the reason London After Midnight gets so much more attention is because of the fact that it is an unseen horror role and the make-up is absolutely frightening I think Sid or whoever wants to further this should get in contact with this Ted Newsom because he seems to be the only who has proof that this is not a
hoax

Quite the epic tale, and well-written! I hope this gets a few asses in gear and something comes of the search before it's too late.

It's Turner Classic Movies, Not Turner Movie Classics. | #33

Err, don't you mean TCM, and not TMC? Although, you are not the first person I have heard switch those letters around.
Yes, I wondered about AMERICAN MOVIE CLASSICS being mentioned right away too. But again, it could have just been an honest mistake. .

This is my first post, so be gentle.
The thing I find interesting about this whole thing that it was found so long ago. Now there's a huge search for it, presumably at the UCLA archives, if this is correct. For a long time, we thought that the original length of Metropolis reels were long gone. This year (or last), they were found in an archive, just sitting there. This movie was thought to be long gone, lost forever never to be seen again. No one had ever thought that something like this would have ever come up ever again. Many film historians would have scoffed at the idea of it being around if someone claimed they had a copy of it. It would have been laughable. But it was found and we all said "Wow!" and myself, sat there stunned reading the news on The Digital Bits Now it's being faithfully restored and due to be released next year, thankfully, on to DVD and Blu-Ray. But I have always thought that there has to be copies of certain films just not in vaults laying around since they really didn't keep archives well like we do now. When I was told about this film a long time ago, I scoffed at the idea that this film would be forever lost and there had to be a copy of it somewhere, be it in a private collection gathering dust (like Metropolis) or in a vault, forgotten or mislabeled. But alas, this could be the case now, somewhere in UCLA where hopefully, they find that copy. I'm very weary that this is real, but something keeps nagging at me saying this could very well be real. It happened with Metropolis, maybe…just maybe. Harry at AICN is now thinking the story isn't possibly a fairy tale (saying it nicely) which gives me some credence to the story itself. I personally refuse to jump on the bandwagon and call it a bunch of lies or what have you. This is way too public and with the internet it just got bigger and if its false, he's going to have more than just egg on his face. I just hope it's the real deal. |

With the publicity this is getting (Yahoo carried a story about this yesterday), there will be more interest on this and the big search for it, if it
hasn't already happened. But the statement "Prove Us Wrong" is somewhat weak, but if this is turning heads with film buffs, like I mentioned in
my previous post, people are listening. If this turns out to be a fraud, then well...we all know what happens then. But if its found...
... I want to see frames of the film, which they showed with Metropolis for proof
of the real thing (outside the studio saying it was real).
